CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

It is an honour for me to be elected to serve as Chair of IEEE Malaysia Section for the 2009 term.  I wish to thank Prof. Dr. Mohd. Nasir Taib for his leadership and achievements as Chair for 2007 - 2008.

With over 390,000 members, 311 Sections, 1450 Chapters and 1300 student branches in over 80 countries worldwide, IEEE is the world’s largest technical society. IEEE publishes more than a third of the world’s technical literature, and its publications are highly sought after by professionals. The IEEE journals are consistently among the most highly cited references in electrical and electronics engineering. The IEEE digital library, with average downloads of five million articles monthly, is arguably one of the world’s most trusted reference.

In Malaysia, IEEE was established in 1987. Over the 21 years of our existence, IEEE Malaysia Section has developed into a thriving organization. Its membership now stands at 1700, with 15 chapters, 2 affinity groups and 9 student branches. In the year 2008 alone, IEEE Malaysia Section organized more than 25 technical conferences, numerous workshops, seminars and hosted visits of more than 20 distinguished speakers from abroad. From these activities, the presence of IEEE in the Malaysian public has been enhanced tremendously.

 This year IEEE is celebrating its 125th anniversary, with the theme Celebrating 125 years of engineering the future. Through the effort of its members worldwide, IEEE advances global prosperity by fostering technological innovations, promoting community and enabling member’s careers. IEEE brings people together from diverse backgrounds ranging from aerospace systems to nanotechnology, and from consumer electronics to cybernetics, for one common initiative - to show that engineering is for mankind. Throughout history, the work of IEEE members have changed the course of history of mankind. As such the theme chosen for this celebration is apt. In conjunction with this celebration, IEEE Malaysia Section will be planning a series of activities to commemorate this event. This year IEEE is facing strong challenges and the recent economic downturn affects everyone. We anticipate many of our members will be affected. IEEE Malaysia Section is gearing itself to assist members by providing more hands-on skills training, technical competency courses and seminars. It is our sincere hope that these trainings will provide members with new skills, increased flexibility and adaptability, so that they will be more equipped and ready to take part when the economy resumes.On behalf of the Executive Committee of IEEE Malaysia Section I wish to thank you for your trust in us, and hope you will find our performance worthy of your support.

Sincerely;

Prof. Dr. Zaiki Awang

Chair, IEEE Malaysia Section, 2009-2010
